A yet-to-be-identified driver has been blamed for a deadly crash in the Lekki area of Lagos State that claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy and left four other children seriously injured, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred at about 2:31 p.m. on Sunday along Wole Olateju Crescent, Kingshisha, Lekki Phase 1, in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area, when the driver of a Lexus RX 300 jeep allegedly lost control of the vehicle while overspeeding and ploughed into the group of children who were standing at the gate of a residence, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of the fire service, said preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle lost control due to excessive speed, striking the five boys aged between eight and 13 years. Four of the victims were rescued alive and rushed to a hospital by well-wishers, where they are receiving treatment for severe injuries, while the nine-year-old was suspected dead at the scene

Emergency personnel worked alongside police officers from the Maroko Police Division, who took over the scene for further investigation, as traffic and rescue operations continued. The vehicle involved and the severely injured victims sustained various damages and injuries, highlighting the devastating impact of reckless driving in the city.

The tragic crash has once again brought attention to the issue of speeding and road safety violations in Lagos, where high-speed crashes often result in fatalities and severe injuries, especially among vulnerable pedestrians and children. Authorities said the matter remains under investigation as they seek to determine whether charges will be filed against the driver.
