In Nigeria: Man Detained by Department of State Services Over SIM Previously Used by Kidnappers — Family Says It Was Bought Lawfully

Abuja / Ekiti — December 4, 2025 | Dalena Reporters

A man from Ekiti State has reportedly been arrested and detained by the DSS after a SIM card he purchased during a visit to Lagos was allegedly traced to use by kidnappers. His family says the SIM was not just given, the SIM was lawfully bought.

According to his daughter, the arrest occurred on Sunday when operatives, reportedly from Lagos, swooped on their residence in Ekiti. She said the SIM card in question was legally registered; her father had even retained the original documentation and packaging at the time of arrest.

Since the arrest, the family says they have been denied all access. A neighbor who tried to visit was met with threats and force, and the DSS has refused to confirm or disclose the father’s location or the charges against him.

Family members have raised alarm over his medical condition and the lack of communication, demanding immediate access, clarity of charges, and urgent medical attention.

As of now, the DSS has not issued any public comment or clarification about the arrest or the status of the detainee. His detention appears to reflect growing concerns over policing methods, the recycling of SIM cards, and the treatment of citizens suspected of association with criminal activity.
