A final-year student of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has died after a celebratory motorcade crash following the conclusion of his final exams. The accident occurred on Monday as the newly graduated students took to the road in a convoy to mark their signing-out celebrations.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that tragedy struck when the vehicle carrying the student attempted to overtake another moving truck along the Ekpoma–Auchi expressway. The overtaking manoeuvre reportedly went wrong, causing the car to lose control and crash into a stationary vehicle parked along the roadside.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said one person died while five others suffered injuries of varying degrees. The victims were part of a convoy of fresh graduates celebrating the end of their university journey.

According to the FRSC, reckless driving and failure to observe basic road-safety rules contributed to the disaster. The agency has advised students — and graduates in general — to avoid taking part in dangerous celebrations on public roads, and instead to mark their milestones in safer environments.

As the family and friends of the deceased mourn, the tragic event has sparked renewed calls for greater awareness around road safety — especially during celebratory convoys. What should have been a day of jubilation has become a reminder of how quickly joy can turn into grief on Nigeria’s roads.
