Former UK PM Boris Johnson Says He Feels “Perfectly Safe” in Nigeria Despite Rising Insecurity

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson, while speaking at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri on Thursday, declared that he felt “perfectly safe” in Nigeria dismissing negative security warnings that preceded his visit. 

Johnson admitted he had seen media reports warning of security issues in Nigeria before travelling, but said he “decided to come anyway.” He turned to the summit audience and asked whether they felt safe they affirmed then repeated that he too felt “perfectly safe.

In his address, he also commended Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma for plans to deliver 24-hour electricity and said he believed artificial intelligence would play a central role in Nigeria’s economic and infrastructural development. He described the country’s potential as “incredible.

Johnson’s comments come at a time when Nigeria continues to battle a surge in kidnappings, banditry, and communal violence, raising serious concerns about security across various states.
