President Bola Tinubu has publicly congratulated Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, on their resounding 4-1 victory over Gabon in their latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, and called on them to “build on this victory and remain focused” as they pursue a spot at the global tournament.

In a statement issued from the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu described the victory as a “clear expression of the Nigerian character” — one that rises, adapts and prevails — and affirmed that the performance reflected courage, balance and precision on the pitch. He remarked that football remains one of Nigeria’s “most potent symbols of unity and shared pride.

The President took time to commend the players, the coaching staff, and the entire technical and administrative crew for their “unwavering commitment to the national cause,” noting that the team’s dedication had translated into results. He also highlighted the depth of talent in the country and the Super Eagles’ determination to reclaim their standing among Africa’s elite football teams.

Addressing Nigerians at home and abroad, Tinubu thanked the millions of fans whose support had served as a “powerful driving force” for the team at critical junctures of international competition. He then issued a direct message to the squad: “This is the true Nigerian spirit of resilience against all odds. Do not stop until you secure a qualification. Super Eagles, keep soaring. The nation stands with you!

In closing his remarks, Tinubu reminded the team that every match ahead presents an opportunity to demonstrate discipline and character, and to prove anew that Nigeria’s ambition of reaching the 2026 World Cup is “firmly within reach.
